History of beer in Würzburg

Today Würzburg is known for its wine, vineyards and wineries.
But there were also times when there were more breweries than wine taverns in Würzburg - at least for a short time. In 1852 there were twelve breweries in the city.
In 1866 and 1872 riots against the increase in beer prices took place in Würzburg. This shows how important their beer was to the people of Würzburg.

Würzburger Hofbräu Brewery

The Würzburger Hofbräu brewery is the only remaining large brewery in Würzburg. It was founded by Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Schönborn in 1643 and the prefix "Hof" (which means Court) still shows that. In the 19th century, the brewery also became internationally active and was one of the first breweries to export to the USA. Since 2005 the Würzburger Hofbräu GmbH is owned by the Kulmbacher Brewery.

„Sternla“ and „Keiler Bier“ are brands / subsidaries of Würzburger Hofbräu.

Brewpubs and Microbreweries in Würzburg

The Goldene Gans beer garden combines the idea of a beer garden and brewery. Their delicious home-brewed beer is only served in the beer garden beneath the Alte Mainbrücke.

Since the craft beer trend, numerous smaller beer brands have also developed in Würzburg, for example „Herbipolis“ of the SMaSH (Single Malt and Single Hop) Brewing Project or the beers of Maischerei Mayr & Müller.

Cultural and Creative Center Bürgerbräu Würzburg

The Würzburger Bürgerbräu is a former brewery whose history goes back to the 19th century. The brewery went out of business in 1989 but the site with the old brewery buildings, some of which date back to 1886, remained unchanged. Since 2012, the area has been revitalized as a so-called cultural and creative center, with the buildings largely preserved and modernized.

Today, the site is home to:
Central im Bürgerbräu (Cinema)
glück UND GUT. (Café)
Sektkellerei Höfer (Sparkling wine cellar)
Keller Z87 (Event location)
Maschinenhaus (Event location)
Tanzschule Ballroom (Dance school)
Stores
a farmers' market (once a month)
and many more...

Good beers are also brewed in the Main-Spessart and Rhön regions, for example the "Herzog von Franken" from the Arnsteiner brewery or the famous Kreuzberg Monastery Beer from the “Holy Mountain of the Franconians”.
