Leisure
The Franconian Wine Country offers great scope for sporting holidays and relaxation alike. Hikers will find plenty of walks in the area. The Maintal Hiking Path and the Main-Donau-Bodensee (Main-Danube-Lake Constance) Hiking Path are national trails along the Main river. In Greater Würzburg a wide network of trails, including the vineyards, can be found in the Gramschatzer and Guttenberger Forests or around Volkach and Iphofen. An archaeological trail in the Tauber and Gollach valleys leads to Celtic entrenchments, barrows, wayside shrines and fortifications from prehistoric times and early history. The "Steinweinpfad" trail in the centre of the world famous vineyard "Würzburger Stein" offers, besides the magnificent panorama view of Würzburg, a lot of information on wine growing in Franconia. Anglers can pursue their hobby undisturbed on the Main, Saale, Sinn, Tauber and Gollach rivers. Water sports fans will find ideal conditions for swimming, sailing, waterskiing, and boat trips on the Main river, in bathing lakes and countless open-air and indoor swimming pools. This also applies for tennis and horse riding and not least for gliding and flying. Golf enthusiasts will enjoy playing a round of golf at the Golf Club Würzburg where lessons are also offered. Picnic grounds and huts, educational trails, keep-fit trails, mini-golf, horse-and-carriage-trips and above all scenic boat trips on the Main river offer lots of holiday fun.
Cycling fans will get their money's worth in the Franconian Wine Country. Greater Würzburg boasts a 500 km long network of cycle routes for which maps are available. From Würzburg appropriate connections linking Spessart, Rhön and Haßberge mountains and the fringes of the Steigerwald forest have been created. In the Tauber Valley to the south of Würzburg the cycling route "Liebliches Taubertal" from Rothenburg to Wertheim has proven a true winner amongst cyclists.
